When looking to redecorate your kitchen you first have to decide want kind of kitchen decorating style you should go for. Certainly the choices that are now available will leave you baffled and bewildered but by remembering a few things about the kitchen the choice you make will be the right one for you. After the bathroom the kitchen is the most important room in any house and it should also be remembered that after the entrance hall to your home the kitchen has the most foot traffic occurring in it.
Its true that there are so many styles of kitchen decor, its hard to know where to start. Well, choosing a style is always the first step. The challenge for many is that they dont know the styles, or which style they prefer. To help you get started with this, consider spending some time (a month or so) collecting designs you like from magazines, catalogs, home dcor showrooms, etc. After collecting pictures of designs you like, look for central themes. Usually youll notice that most of the things you selected look very similar. Then, try to match the rooms you like with one of the five most popular styles noted below.
1. Country Classic – Sometimes referred to as early American or colonial style, this design is often found in quaint farm style kitchens. One distinctive feature of this style is open shelving, pot racks, and exposed spice racks, fruit baskets, etc. In many cases the cabinets are either white, or natural pine, which was common during early colonial times.
2. Modern Contemporary ” This style was extremely popular during the 90s and early 2000s but is beginning to fade a little. It is noted by its clean and simple lines, which give it a modern and almost futuristic look. Many are going away from this style for kitchen design because its emphasis is on sophistication, rather than warmth and livability. Because a kitchen is one of the most lived in rooms in the home, many opt for a warmer, lived in style.
3. Classic Shaker ” This style is simple and utilitarian. Shaker kitchens feature flat panel doors, wooden countertops and brass handles (hardware). Colors are often light and warm, and its defining characteristic is simplicity.
4. French Country – Such kitchen designs based on this style are warm and inviting with lots of wood and soft colours being used. Not only do natural materials feature heavily in this style of kitchen, but you will find that the furniture used is large and rather ornate.
5. Crafty Chic ” Gaining popularity in recent years, this style features the use of glass doors and natural wood tones finished in a matte finish. Central to this dcor style is the use of decorative items such as tiles, plates, and other objects. While warm, inviting, and fun this style can sometimes become cluttered if a designer gets carried away with too many trinkets.
Remember, when choosing a theme for your kitchen, you must also consider the styles of the other rooms in your home, especially those rooms that are adjoining the kitchen. Your style should be an overall fit with the other rooms in your home where possible. Also, make sure to use transition rooms such as entry ways, hallways, and dining rooms as a segway from one design style to another.
