Having a professional interior designer to do the decorating work for you sounds heavenly, isn’t it? What better way than to spend your days lounging around waiting for a person who knows exactly what she’s doing present design proposals and do the dirty task of scouting around for the best decorations and furniture? I love the idea! Except that I don’t have the money to pay for an interior designer and I prefer to stand my ground and do the decorating MY way. Hey, it’s my house after all. After the renovation buzz dies down, I’m the one who will spend my life in that house. I figured I would rather do the dirty work and grueling task of home decorating. Fortunately, with all the available resources, varying prices and possible ideas, home decorating can be just as affordable and hassle-free as a nice afternoon stroll around the neighborhood. Now, I love that idea much more!
There are basic components to decorating. Window treatments, floor coverings, interior painting, lighting and furniture all come into play when you are considering decorating your home. The trick to good decorating is to tie all of these components in together when it comes to style and color.
First ask yourself what kind of home you want. Everything will depend on your theme. It can be an artist’s loft, a country home, cabin lodge, beach house, city apartment, suburban home, mountain lodge, resort style, etc. The ideas are numerous that it can actually get confusing. A tip is to consider your likes – what makes you happy, what appeals to you, what makes you comfortable, what kind of house you see yourself coming home to, and other things that matter to you.
By incorporating your own personal agenda, you can find a theme that is perfect for YOU. From there, select items that are appropriate. Obviously, a glass table doesn’t really look in place in a cabin lodge theme nor does a rattan sofa set suitable for a city dweller’s apartment. Match your furnishings from the idea you want. If it’s country style, use light colors, prints, soft fabrics and hardwood. If it’s a beach house theme, rattan and bamboo are ideal materials to use. Colors depicting the sea and sand are also perfect.
On the other hand, if you prefer a contemporary theme, modern furnishings are called for. Furnishings are sleek made of glass or stainless steel, floor is made of tiles or hardwood, color is monochromatic and window blinds are usually utilized instead of curtains. An area rug in geometric design works nicely with a room in off white and other neutral shades. If you want to up the elegance, more expensive rugs like Persian or Oriental will certainly stamp a valuable price tag on your home.
Any kind of theme, whether it’s formal or casual and sophisticated or laidback can benefit from the decorative appeal of area rugs. Rugs also vary in designs and fabrics that can suit any theme. The colors are also big in selection that matching any motif is feasible. There are even area rugs with a blend of two or more colors that work well with an interior that is also adorned with differing shades. Hence, whatever your theme is, an area rug can complement and highlight a space. At the same time, it can also give a warm and inviting feel to your home.
Having decided on a theme, rest assured that everything else would come easy. If you already have a groundwork to base your decorating from, you’ll know what items to buy and colors to use. Even the designs and patterns will be easier to choose.
On a last note, if you can’t decide on a theme because of fondness for two or more ideas, then you can incorporate elements from these varying motifs. Mixing and matching can be fun. It is an adventure to dabble on different things. It’s like a freelancer for various fields – versatile and adaptable. With the right mixture of decorating elements, especially in the materials, the results can be impressive. Just remember to add a hint of your personality and your place will be an epitome of an eclectic yet real home.
