Whether we are into woodworking or not the majority of us know a little something about sandpaper even if it is just the name. Sandpaper is really just a very mild form of a chisel for example or any tool that reduces or alters the wood. The sandpaper is made of tiny coarse blades. Needless to say, they are very fragile and therefore wear down quickly.

One of the issues of using sandpaper is knowing which one to use for which job. To begin with, you have to determine whether you want commercial or industrial sandpaper. You will have less looking around for stores to buy it from if you are using the commercial grade as most hardware stores or home building centers keep it in stock. The industrial is more specialized and is an item most often used on the manufacturing line.

When you hear someone refer to sandpaper, you will most probably hear them refer to grit. All this is, is the way to identify what strength it is. Its referring to each of those little blades we talked about per inch. So the lower the number the coarser the sandpaper will be.

Now with a little understanding you need to determine which grit you need for which job. As we said, they are several to choose from and it will depend on the job you have to do. If you have heavy, sanding where you need to strip the paint or rough up the surface then you will need 40-60 coarse grit. Lighter sanding required for removing small imperfections means you would use an 80-120 medium grit. The final sanding before you are going to put your finish on dictates the use of 150-180 fine. Then for in between the stain coating you use the very fine, which is 220-240. If you have, some dust marks in-between these coatings you can use the extra fine grit 280-320 and then finally for some light scratches you can use the super fine 360-600 grit.

There are various backings used on the sandpapers such as low-grade fabric or Kraft paper. These are held on with bonding agents.

Going through the grits means working on your project from the heavier sandpapers up through to the lighter ones. Usually if all looks well you can finish off at the 150-180 grit although up to 200 if you are going to use a water base stain.

You may hear reference to open and closed coat sandpaper. Open coat has spaces between the grits which means less clogging and is more applicable for woodwork. Closed grit works better on metal and wood finishes but clogs easily.

There are four different types of sandpaper each having a specific use. Aluminum oxide most commonly used by woodworkers. Garnet also another favorite but is short lived. Then Silicon carbon more for steel, paint, plastic and fiberglass and finally ceramic which is the toughest of all of them. It is very expensive and is used predominantly for shaping and leveling.

Using the wind to power your own home from equipment in your own home, is very exciting and has what it takes to be a major force of renewable energy in the coming years. Although, many of those in the media do not seem to realize this.

The tech that goes in DIY wind turbines has been developing at a lightening pace. A professional system can now be built reasonably easily by people who don’t have any experience in this type of thing, or a specialist knowledge. They are not the same size as those turbines in the large wind parks, but are much smaller and will work very well in an average yard or garden. Although, you will need wind!

By building you own wind turbine you help yourself in some many different areas. First of course is the good that it will do from an environmental perspective.

I personally started for financial reasons, but now home wind power and also solar power as well are my hobbies. I have made a lot of good friends and shared a lot of good times because of them.

There is a little that needs to be spent to get everything you need to build a turbine. Much of the stuff can be found around most homes, but if it can’t then the total cost to buy it all should not be more than 200 bucks.

Also you will need to get yourself a really high quality instruction manual. These guides take people through the process from start to finish and assume you are starting as a novice.

Having your own business or personal work station is nice to have to get work done, despite the noisy environment a home can be. The home office shouldn’t be neglected in design, though, since it will be your working environment for a long time to come. Being pleased with your working space is dire for work satisfaction.

The home office can’t function without the right desk. If you are the only one that uses your home office, you can go for ergonomics and comfort rather than trying to impress others with a lustrous desk design. If space permits, consider getting a “U” shaped design so that you can be completely immersed in the business environment and the tools you need to operate.

Getting work done is the sole purpose of a home office. You wouldn’t be able to get any done at all without the proper office chair. Shorting your budget on an office chair will be a quickly learned mistake as soon as it wears down and the padding becomes non-existant. Have the foresight to buy a chair that will last longer than a short-lived year.

The basics of home office furniture have already been covered. Don’t be afraid to march on and find other forms of office furniture, such as a well-sized table or a couple of chairs for guests. Even if you don’t have a flow of partners or clients coming to visit you, having the option to host a business meeting in your own home will have its benefits. Plus, designing only half of your office means half the fun!

The bookworm in all of us wishes that we had a place to store our books, and the home office is the perfect place to do so. Business reports, instruction manuals, and information on business contacts needs to be at close hand so you can remain productive. Keeping a bookcase will enable you to sort the information according to subject. After all, there are some things that a computer just can’t store, and a bookcase is still a mandatory item.

Don’t be too concerned over all the upgrades that you can buy. Most states allow for a tax deduction for any business furniture that you obtain. Check with your accountant to see if the interior design items you had in mind will fit into the tax deductions that are available. If so, you’re in luck, but otherwise you should still consider going forth with the redesign if it’s needed.
