There are so many fun activities you can do with your kids. Playing sports, camping, going to the beach and shopping are some of the family favorites. But did you know that decorating is also an enjoyable activity that parents and children can do together? You get to share your ideas and favorites. Why not invite your children to do some decorating work for their bedrooms? I’m sure they’ll love the idea of having a “new room” and more importantly, the tempting thought that this time, they’re the boss!

A princess room is perfect for a little girl. Pink and purple walls are perfect for a princess room. A pretend crystal chandelier hanging from a light fixture will give the room that extra touch, making it look like a royal palace. When creating a princess room royal bed linens are in order. Linens made of satin and lace fit perfectly into any princess room.

Dinosaurs – this is a popular pick among boys. The idea of being in prehistoric times is very exciting for these young lads. Earth colors rule this theme alongside dinosaur miniatures, stuffed toys and posters.

Nature – this is ideal for kids who are into the outdoors – beach, mountains, farm, camp, etc. Earth colors work too but dominated by blues and greens to symbolize nature. You can also incorporate the crisp white color reminiscent of the fluffy clouds in the beddings and curtains. Plants in the room add to the natural feel of the room.

Decorating your children’s room is all about fun. So displaying their artworks is a great idea. They will have their own masterpiece as wall decors. Incorporating their favorite things and colors will also make them happy everyday. Make sure that there is enough storage compartment for keeping their things.

Music/Movies – this theme can even extend to teenage years. Music is universal and movies are extremely well-liked. If you choose a music theme, it would be nice to have a sound system albeit a simple one to meet the theme. CD or DVD racks, posters, a funky light and comfortable ottomans or settees will make the room the best place to listen to music or to watch movies.

Whatever your children choose, help them maintain their rooms by using functional things in the first place. With an area rug for example, they wouldn’t have a hard time scrubbing their floors clean. With multi-purpose furnishings, they can store items they accumulate over time without having to crowd their room with another cabinet or drawer and with sufficient lighting fixture, studying will be more convenient.

Paint – a change in color is a magical transformation that doesn’t need elves and wizards. All you need are a good can of paint, brush and perhaps a primer. Moving to another color scheme is a totally new look for your bedroom. However, going one shade lighter or darker is an effective way too to give your room a new do. Just remember that if you do intend to use a darker color, such shade can make a space look smaller. Hence, if you don’t wish to make your bedroom appear smaller, opt for a lighter shade instead because this conversely makes a space look bigger. Consider the mood you wish to have. If you want a more intimate and elegant look, darker shades will do the job. If on the other hand, you want an airy, cheerful feel, lighter or brighter hues are your choices. Bottom line…a change in color is a bedroom makeover in a snap!

Beddings – these items are often taken for granted as they are merely seen as bed covers. But did you know that these fabrics could add appeal to a room? Similarly, they can ruin a room’s look with the wrong pattern or color. With the new paint comes the new bedding. Complementing colors is an important factor in decorating. You don’t want any off-looking item in your bedroom. There is a wide assortment of bed covers, bedsheets, pillow covers, duvet and comforter in discount shops. You can also check out any ongoing sales in your local malls.

Accent the bed some more by placing an area rug on its side or at its foot. Waking up to the feel of lush texture is an energizer. Sitting on the bedroom floor too will count as life’s simple pleasure, plus a space-saver with the possibility of doing without a chair or couch, especially if there’s limited space. You don’t really need a Persian or Oriental rug. Save those supreme quality rugs for the living room. For now, you’ll be able to get nice area rugs just the same with a limited budget.

Treat your windows with a curtain or window blinds. For a curtain, it doesn’t have to be an ultra thick fabric. Again, save the formality for your living room for welcoming visitors. A curtain or blinds in a subtle color is cozy enough to give a relaxing ambiance to your bedroom.

Decorate your bedroom with not just personal items but those things that you love. They can be simple artworks, special photos, presents or souvenirs. You can hang a collage of photos as a wall decor, or make a bulletin board for posting special notes, greeting cards and other wacky photos.

Putting a vase filled with colorful flowers is an instant room refresher, not just with the flowers’ sweet scent but the sight of nature’s best. A windowsill plant or a potted plant is a nice alternative. If you’re into the natural look, combining flowers and plants will make your bedroom the freshest part of the house. Enjoy the oxygenseriously, it’s nice!

You can do all these things in one day and for less than a hundred bucks, especially if you shop in a thrift store. Just like that, your new bedroom awaits you.

There’s nothing wrong with neutral colors. In fact, they are the most usual and safest bets for a design motif. However, with the emergence of more vivid tones, neutral colors can appear quite bland next to brighter, livelier shades. Colors, bolder ones that is, may very well be the key to give more energy, vibrancy and excitement to your home interiors.

It is a good idea to use items that you can already find at home. Aside from saving you on costs, you’re also able to put more of your family’s personality into the decor. A few old landscape photos from past family trips can be blown up and turned into huge images on the wall. Colored doodles and drawings by the kids on plain paper can be framed and turned into quirky yet elegant wall decor.

Painting a room with a new color is of course an obvious coloring method. However, painting is not all about redoing the entire walls. Even painting one side of the wall will already look different. For example, paint one side of a cream wall with a bright blue or deep green and in a snap, the room will look more alive. Some do stripes, trimmings, splashes and strokes. Covering the walls entirely is one coloring trick, but so is accenting with hues.

Nobody said that you had to stick with a solid colored wall, so feel free to experiment with different styles and techniques. Painting an accent wall – a single wall with a big contrast against the rest of the room – creates an immediate focal point. Applying the paint with a sponge or a non-brush applicator gives an illusion of texture and depth to your walls, making them look even more interesting and dramatic.

Decorations with vivid colors are great additions. They can be as ornamental as vases, containers, throw pillows and drapes or as simple as kitchen utensils and hanging pegs. Flowers and fruits are also color boosters without costing much.

Similarly, an area rug can do much to add to the color in a room. They’re available in a vast range of shades and hues, in addition to various prints and designs. Aside from just a source of color, area rugs also provide an additional texture to the flooring and can help define two different spaces in the same room.

Curtains serve a purpose that’s very close to that of rugs. They can either fit in with or contrast against the color scheme that you already have going around the room. At the same time, curtains give you the opportunity to play around with different textures, patterns or proportions to give your room even more interest.

It is surprisingly easy to add color to any room, especially since there are countless items that you could work with. A few simple additions and touches here and there will already be enough to create the effect of an entirely new room.
